"My grandfather said we were made from the giants' shadow, so we could stand in it and plant something. I was nine before I realized he meant it kindly." — a firbolg Riverwarden of Sylvaris
After the War of the First Races, when the Giants had shattered the land, Verdis made the firbolgs: gentle folk with a touch of giant in them, meant to heal and tend what giants had broken. They stand a head or more taller than most humans, bear-sized, with soft fur, broad cow-like noses and long drooping ears. They're built big but made to mend, and most would rather plant a grove than win a fight.
Names
Firbolgs take the naming customs of the land that raised them. Examples:
- Thalen Mossbrook, of Sylvaris
- Orla Fernhollow, of Sylvaris
- Hallbjorn Sigrunsson, of the Bearhide Wanderers of Glacithar
Firbolgs by Homeland
Sylvaris
Most firbolgs live in Sylvaris, among the wood elves. They serve in the Verdant Sentinels, honour the Riverwardens as river guardians, revere Verdant Hollow as Sylvaris' lifeblood, and honour Verdis and Luneth at Moonpetal Grove.
Glacithar
Some firbolgs wandered north along the forest edges and live as nomadic hunters and shamans near the Giants who still remain in Glacithar. Among the Jötnar Clans, the Bearhide Wanderers are firbolgs and shifters who wear bear pelts and move with the seasons.
