The Holy Order, a theocratic knightly society, dominates Sanctara from the city-state Divinholm, ruled by the Pontiff of the Sacred Blade, a figure of absolute authority. The Order enforces a faith centered on the Council of the Divine Knights. Inland, the Order’s theological control is absolute, with cathedrals and knightly orders enforcing doctrine.
Sanctara was once a land of warring kingdoms, unified by the Holy Order after the First Shattering.
The Pontiff and the Archprelates
The Pontiff of the Sacred Blade rules the Holy Order from Divinholm with absolute authority, under the patronage of Sir Aldric. When the seat is empty, the Archprelates gather to choose the next Pontiff, much as cardinals choose a pope. In theory the choice is guided by faith, but in practice it is easily swayed by personal motives, ambition, and hidden alliances. A Pontiff rules for life unless they choose to step down or are overthrown.
- Holy Order: Theocratic knights, allies if the party upholds their faith or aids in defense.
