Aasimar

"The pilgrims kneel when she passes. She hates it. She told me once that being born closer to the gods doesn't mean you understand them any better. It only means everyone expects you to." — a knight of Divinholm

Aasimar carry a spark of The Twelve's own Aether. It shows in their softly glowing eyes and in a faint glint above their heads that looks like a halo. The halo's shape follows whichever god they're connected to, so it might be a sunburst, a crescent, a flame or a wave. Beyond that, they're as varied as anyone: hot-tempered, gentle, stubborn or funny. In Sanctara they're revered and often raised for holy service from childhood. Many struggle with that weight, since everyone expects them to be a living sign of the gods, and few are ever asked what they want for themselves.

Names

When a child's halo first shows, a priest of that god gives them a halo name that echoes the god's own, so anyone who knows the faiths can guess an aasimar's god from their name alone. Their family name comes from their parents' culture and is the name that tends to stick. Examples:

  • Solen Harrow, of Solara, the Dawn Flame
  • Myrel Ashby, of Myrath, the River Sage
  • Zephan Corwell, of Zephyris, the Wind Dancer
  • Umric Vale, of Umral, the Stone Forger

Aasimar by Homeland

Sanctara

Aasimar of Sanctara are the Seraphs and holy servants of Divinholm, honoured, watched and rarely free to choose another path.

Beyond Sanctara

Aasimar are rare outside Sanctara, and they draw looks wherever they go. Strangers ask them for blessings, merchants won't take their coin, and people are quick to treat them as divine. Some lean into it, some hide their halo under hoods, and some crack under the pressure of living up to something they never chose.
