Living Palette

You were not born of dragons, storms, or shadows. You were born with a creativity so intense it rewrote the rules of magic inside you. Color and form seethe beneath your skin, demanding to be made real. When you pick up a brush, that raw creative force spills out as living aether.

What you paint does not stay flat on a surface. Motifs step off the canvas as constructs of pure color and will. You can flood the battlefield in swirling storms of pigment that empower your allies and accelerate your own magic. At the height of your power, your creations become true masterpieces — capable of fighting as independent forces of art and, when the moment is right, exploding into violent sprays of color that leave enemies vulnerable to almost every form of harm.

Your magic is not a bloodline. It is the unrelenting need to create, given form and teeth.

Aetherial Spells

1st-level Living Palette feature

You learn additional spells when you reach certain levels in this class, as shown on the Aetherial Spells table. Each of these spells counts as a sorcerer spell for you, but it doesn’t count against the number of sorcerer spells you know.

Whenever you gain a sorcerer level, you can replace one spell you gained from this feature with another spell of the same level.

Palette Spells

Sorcerer Level Spells
1st color spray, faerie fire
3rd mirror image, phantasmal force
5th hypnotic pattern, major image
7th greater invisibility, phantasmal killer
9th animate objects, creation

Painter’s Focus

1st-level Living Palette feature

You gain proficiency with painter’s supplies. You can use painter’s supplies (or any wand, staff, or rod) as a spellcasting focus for your sorcerer spells. When you do, the focus takes on the appearance of a magical paintbrush and palette if it doesn’t already.

In addition, while holding a brush used as your focus, you can use it as a simple melee weapon with the finesse property. It deals 1d6 force damage on a hit.

Living Motif

1st level feature

As a bonus action, you can expend 1 sorcery point to paint a Living Motif in an unoccupied space you can see within 30 feet. The Motif lasts for 1 minute, until it drops to 0 hit points, until you dismiss it as a bonus action, or until you create another Motif (you can have only one Motif active at a time).

The Motif is a construct under your control. You choose its appearance (a creature, floating weapon, swirling color form, etc.). It uses these statistics:

  • AC 10 + your Charisma modifier
  • Hit Points 5 × your sorcerer level
  • Speed 30 feet (it can hover if you wish)

On your turn, you can mentally command the Motif (no action required). It can move and take one of the following actions:

  • The Help action
  • The Dodge action
  • Make one melee or ranged attack (+ your spell attack bonus to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 30/60 ft.). On a hit it deals 1d8 + your Charisma modifier force damage.

The Motif vanishes if you become incapacitated.

Melee - Make one melee or ranged attack (+ your spell attack bonus to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 30/60 ft.). On a hit it deals 1d8 + your Charisma modifier force damage.

Living Color

6th-level Living Palette feature

As an action, you can expend 3 sorcery points to paint a swirling storm of living color in a 20-foot radius centered on a point within 60 feet of you. Vivid streaks of pigment and aether whip and spiral through the area. The zone lasts for 1 minute or until you dismiss it as a bonus action.

As a bonus action on your turn, you can move the zone up to 30 feet to a new point you can see within 60 feet of you.

While the zone persists:

  • You and your allies within the zone deal an extra 1d4 force damage whenever they hit with a weapon attack or a spell attack.
  • While you are inside the zone, the first time you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher on each of your turns, you can apply one Metamagic option you know to that spell without spending sorcery points.

Portrait Mastery

14th-level Living Palette feature

  • The hit points of your Living Motifs increase to 6 × your sorcerer level.
  • Their attacks now deal 2d8 + your Charisma modifier force damage, and they can make two attacks when they take the Attack action.
  • Once during each Motif’s duration, you can use a bonus action to cause the Motif to violently burst. The Motif is destroyed, and each creature within a 15-foot radius of it must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC.
  • On a failed save, a creature takes 5d8 force damage and is coated in vibrant pigment until the start of your next turn. While coated, the creature is vulnerable to fire, cold, acid, lightning, poison, psychic, radiant, and necrotic damage.
  • On a successful save, the creature takes half damage and is not coated.
  • A creature (or another creature within 5 feet of it) can use an action to wipe the pigment off, ending the effect early.

Masterpiece

18th-level Living Palette feature

  • You can have two Living Motifs active at the same time.
  • When you use Living Color, the extra damage becomes 1d6 force, and while you are inside the zone you can apply the free Metamagic to every sorcerer spell you cast of 1st level or higher (you still apply only one Metamagic option to each spell).

Once per long rest, when you create a Living Motif, you can declare it a Masterpiece. A Masterpiece has the following benefits:

  • It has 100 hit points.
  • It makes three attacks when it takes the Attack action.
  • When it bursts, the radius becomes 20 feet, the damage becomes 8d8 force, and the pigment cannot be wiped off early (it lasts until the start of your next turn no matter what).
