Kobolds

"The dragonborn curse the dragons for making them. We'd be happy if the dragons only remembered making us." — a kobold miner of Ezogashima

The Dragons made the dragonborn in their own image to rebuild their numbers after the first species fell, and they made kobolds alongside them. Kobolds have the shape of a dragon, but none of the strength and little of the years. Small, quick and endlessly overlooked, they've spent every generation since being used: as servants, as labourers, and by the Ouroboros Cult as warriors and spies.

Names

Kobolds follow Ezogashima naming customs, and since they're seldom given grand names, they're often named for small, useful things. Examples:

  • Hibana ("spark")
  • Kozuchi ("little hammer")
  • Tsubute ("pebble")

Kobolds by Homeland

Ezogashima

In Ezogashima, kobolds are second-class citizens under the Lesser Blood Laws of the Shogunate, barred from owning land, carrying katanas or holding office. They work as miners and servants, tend Sakura Raptor stables for the Kiyomura Clan and the hot springs of the Sakurajima, and are pressed into the ashigaru as labourers and front-line fodder.

The Ouroboros Cult

Some kobolds still serve the dragons who made them, as warriors and spies for the Ouroboros Cult, mostly in Ezogashima and Glacithar. To a kobold who has only ever been overlooked, being needed by a dragon can feel like everything.
