Demons are fiends of the wild dark, the primitive void. See also Devils.
Origin
Born from the wild dark — the swirling, entropic maelstroms within the pre-Aether Dark Expanse that existed before creation. When The Twelve ignited Aether and displaced the Dark, these wild pockets recoiled and birthed demons: primitive entities of pure, instinct-driven negation that exist only to devour without pattern or pause, unraveling the ordered light they can never touch. See Timeline of Nova.
Core Nature
Demons are the primitive void — raw, animalistic absences that feed on Aether depletion through wild, unrestrained consumption. Unlike devils' controlled harvest, demons are the "wildfire" of the void: they gorge on life, hope, and potential in frenzied bursts, turning everything to nothing.
Eternally vicious and never satiated; every bite sharpens their hunger, driving endless rampage. They are the antithesis of change and order.
Appearance & Instinct
- Varied forms: with tendrils that lash like whips, maws that gape without end, eyes that swirl as absorbing voids. No consistent shape — they briefly echo a victim's fear before dissolving back into formless rage.
- "Bodies" drip ichor that corrodes reality on contact, leaving trails of withered ground or hollowed minds.
- No speech — only guttural roars, psychic screams of endless want, or silent, oppressive dread that crushes the will.
Personality & Psychology
- Primitive and instinctual: no words, no plans, no philosophy — only vicious, insatiable drive to consume. They obey no logic beyond hunger; a demon might possess a host for moments of frenzied violence, then leap to the next victim without reason.
- No true individuality — they exist as extensions of the wild dark, reacting to Aether's glow like predators to blood.
- Subservient to devils when leashed, but only because the chain starves defiance. They sense weakness instantly — a faltering devil is devoured in a heartbeat.
The Abyss
- No true society or hierarchy — only endless, swirling abyssal layers ruled by temporary "princes" until overthrown or consumed.
- Layers are chaotic maelstroms of void: upper ones teem with swarms of lesser fiends drawn to Aether rifts; deeper ones are pure entropic voids where even form dissolves.
- When leashed by devils, demons serve as bound muscle, spies, or terror-weapons — a status symbol for their handlers. But the leash is brittle; demons break free at the first sign of weakness, often growing stronger by absorbing the devil's stolen Aether.
Methods & Influence
- Eruption: Burst through larger Aether rifts. No subtlety — they rampage in packs or alone, drawn to Aether hotspots like sharks to chum.
- Wild Consumption: Devour indiscriminately: possess warriors for mindless slaughter, corrupt lands into wastelands, shatter minds into gibbering wrecks. No deals or temptations — just instinctive destruction that accelerates Aether fade.
- Possession & Spread: Leap between hosts and victims, leaving hollowed husks. A single demon can ignite a plague of violence, turning sane societies into apocalyptic ruins overnight.
Role in the World
- Flash-Flood Decay: Harbingers of raw collapse, erupting in uncontrolled outbreaks. They turn fertile regions to wastelands or drive cults into nihilistic frenzy.
- Rivalry with Devils: Despise devils as pretentious mimics who chain and delay the feast. The Blood Feud is one-sided: devils leash demons for control; demons revolt and devour at weakness, seeing devils as just more Aether to consume.
Weaknesses & Vulnerabilities
- Primitiveness as Flaw: Predictable and mindless; outwitted by clever glamour or enduring defenses.
- Leash Dependency: When bound by devils, they're restrained tools — break the chain, and they turn on their master, but also become directionless.
- Over-Gorging: Wild consumption can backfire: devour Aether too quickly in one spot, and the void collapses, sucking the demon back into the Dark Expanse.
