Devils are fiends of the structured dark, hungry reflections of mortal order. See also Demons.
Origin
Born from the structured dark — the rigid, crystalline voids within the Dark Expanse. When The Twelve ignited Aether and displaced the Dark, these structured pockets recoiled and condensed into devils: entities of pure darkness that mimic mortal order, laws and society not out of admiration, but as the most efficient way to infiltrate and consume the light they crave but can never truly have. See Timeline of Nova.
Core Nature
Devils are hungry reflections — parasitic mirrors of humanoid civilization, ambition, hierarchy, and structure. They copy mortal traits with eerie precision to get close enough to drain Aether slowly and methodically. They feed directly on Aether depletion — the slow erosion of life, hope, order, and potential through exploitation, corruption, and twisted "justice."
Eternally hungry; every deal, law twisted, or soul hollowed widens their inner void but never fills it. They savor the controlled, long-term feast over the demon's wild gorging.
Appearance & Mimicry
- Sleek, humanoid-shaped voids with false skin that imitates mortal features.
- Wear "borrowed" attire: regal clothes, crowns of shadowed gold.
- Eyes are empty pits reflecting the viewer's deepest desire (wealth, power, justice), but up close they warp into a pulling vacuum that draws light inward.
- When weakened, angered, or revealing true form, mimicry cracks — skin flakes off revealing the void, voice echoes with layered whispers of broken promises.
Personality & Psychology
- Calculating, eloquent, rule-obsessed. Speak flawless mortal tongues, quote laws verbatim, debate philosophy, forge rigged contracts.
- Obsessively hierarchical — infernal courts with endless trials, promotions via out-scheming superiors, demotions ending in consumption by underlings.
- Despise chaos (demons, Klythar's corruption) because it ruins profitable schemes and depletes Aether too quickly. See themselves as the only "civilized" fiends — the sustainable harvesters of light.
- Deep insecurity: they know they are reflections, not originals. Every mimicry reminds them they have no true essence; hunger proves they are incomplete.
The Inverted Dominion
- Anti-Aether prison of void-citadels, mirrored halls, crystalline prisons floating in the structured dark.
- Layered like an inverted pyramid: upper layers mimic mortal grandeur (sleek courts), deeper layers grow stark and abstract (pure void, where souls are filed into nothingness).
- Layers are called Inversions (e.g., the First Inversion of Denial, the Third Inversion of Endless Profit).
- Silent, infinite voids at the lowest depths house the oldest archdevils — places where even reflection ceases, and only hunger remains.
Archdevils
- The oldest, most successful devils, who have survived longer than all others through cunning, betrayal, sustained feeding, and ruthless elimination of rivals. Purely devils who outlasted every competitor over eons.
- Each embodies a perfected negation (denial of humility, hoarding of potential, inversion of justice) because they refined that hunger to mastery.
- Rule from thrones of shadowed glass, wearing crowns that grow heavier with every soul claimed.
Society & Hierarchy
- Bureaucratic nightmare: endless trials, contracts, audits, promotions and demotions.
- Lesser devils (pit fiends, erinyes, imps, bearded devils) serve as enforcers, lawyers, spies, handlers.
- Demons are leashed pets and servants — bound by void chains and contracts that starve disobedience. Owning powerful demons is a status symbol.
- The leash is fragile: weakness lets demons sense slack and devour their master, growing stronger on stolen Aether.
Methods & Influence
- Infiltration: Slip through Aether-thin cracks. Pose as advisors, lawyers, shadowy nobles, "fair" arbiters.
- Pacts: Offer deals parodying justice: "eternal stability" for a king, "profit without risk" for a guild, "vengeance without consequence" for a betrayed lover.
- Corruption: They hollow out institutions from within. A judge who rules a little unfairly, a guild that cheats "just this once", a law that protects the few. Each small rot thins the Aether around it.
- Collection: They rarely take a soul all at once. A broken contract claims it piece by piece, and the debtor fades slowly into grey, joyless obedience.
Role in the World
- Slow Decay: Where demons are a flash flood, devils are erosion. Their influence shows up as cities that slowly turn cruel, courts that stop caring about truth, and kingdoms that grow rich while their people grow empty.
- Rivalry with Demons: Devils see demons as wasteful beasts to be leashed and put to work. The Blood Feud is a war they believe they're winning, right up until a leash snaps.
Weaknesses & Vulnerabilities
- Bound by Their Own Rules: A devil can't break a contract it made, so a clever reading of the terms can trap it.
- Hollow Mimicry: Pure sincerity unsettles them. Genuine kindness, humility or selfless sacrifice is something they can copy but never understand.
- Rivals Below: Every devil has underlings waiting for a stumble, so exposing one's failure can be as deadly to it as any blade.
