"My grandmother still guards the trench where she was born, and she calls the surface 'the dry folly.' I have a ship, a crew and a sky full of stars she's never seen. She asks every year when I'm coming home. I ask her every year to come and see it." — a triton navigator of Tideshallow
Tritons are a sea people native to Nova's oceans, made by The Twelve as the Stewards of the Sea and charged with guarding its waters and the life within them. For ages they kept that duty in cities beneath the waves. Then the First Shattering shook the deep, and several undersea communities broke away and rose to explore the surface world. Today some tritons remain devoted Stewards, while others have made their lives on land and at sea alongside every other species. The two sides still share blood and history, but they don't always understand each other.
Names
Tritons carry a flowing given name and a sea surname. The Stewards keep old names tied to the waters they guard, while surface families take names from their new lives. Examples:
- Nerissa Deepwarden, a Steward of the deep
- Thalassa Coralwatch, a Steward of the reefs
- Kaelis Tideborn, sage of the Starlit Guides in Tideshallow
- Oren Brinewright, a shipwright of Coralhaven

Beneath the Sea
The devoted Stewards still keep the old cities under the waves, guarding the seas as The Twelve charged them to.
Tidegate
Most surface tritons live in Tidegate. They're in Coralhaven, Wavecrest and Tideshallow, honouring Thalyn, Zephyris and Myrath, and many sail with the Squallcallers or serve with the Starlit Guides.
