"In Vaelor they called me the devil's get and spat when I passed. Here in the Senate they call me Senator and argue with my proposals. I much prefer the arguing." — a tiefling senator of Aetheria
Devils have walked among mortals since the world began, wearing false skin to pose as nobles, advisors and lovers. Some of those unions were seductions, others were never a choice at all. Tieflings are the children of those unions and their descendants: fully mortal and full of Aether, but marked by the void with horns, tails and eyes that catch the light strangely. A devil is only ever a reflection. A tiefling is something real.
Most people know of devils and demons, and many suspect where tieflings come from, but it remains superstition, and how a tiefling is treated depends on where they were born.
Names
Tieflings take the naming customs of the land that raised them. Examples:
- Sereth Mordane, of the Ravus Empire
- Corvin Hollowell, of Tidegate
- Livia Castellane, of Aetheria
- Kageri Yamashiro, of Ezogashima
Tieflings by Homeland
Ravus Empire
Tieflings live in Vaelor, Dusktower and Ashend alongside humans, orcs and goblins, serving Voryn and Eclipsa as soldiers and as spies in the Nightweaver Covens. To the rest of Roh-ber, they're proof of what tieflings are: villains.
Tidegate
Even in Roh-ber's most diverse ports, tieflings in Tidegate are watched a little closer than everyone else, and they often have to prove themselves by deeds.
Aetheria
In Aetheria, if you're a part of society, you're just a person. Tieflings work as merchants and spies, and some sit in the Senate.
Ezogashima
In Ezogashima, tieflings are seen as touched by the dark, which is exactly why they're trusted to face it. Many serve as shugenja, sealing rifts with Aether crystal talismans, and Daimyo Rei Kuroyami rules the rift-scarred isle of Yomishima.
